John Claudius Loudon and his wife Jane Webb, an amazing Victorian gardening double act – (Birmingham Victorian lady gardener & science fiction novelist and her Scottish landscape gardening husband). Loudon designed Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Derby Arboretum, the first public park; published the first Gardening periodical; was influential in the development of curvilinear glasshouses, patenting a glazing bar peculiar to these; helped invent the semi-detached house and established the accepted norm of modern gardening. He should be far better known! Jane continued his publishing enterprise, wrote the first book for lady gardeners and began the tradition of influential women gardeners.
