AGM with lecture by Simon Gulliver “Bringing the world to Biddulph: James Bateman, his plants and his remarkable garden.”
November 12 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
James Bateman is rightly famous for his creation of the remarkable, theatrical garden that figuratively brought the world to his home at Biddulph Grange. His artistry, expressed through his friend and co-creator Edward Cooke made a garden of imagination but also created a series of micro-climates on a barren hilside that Bateman exploited to grow novel flora from around the world. The talk briefly introduces the Bateman family and goes on to put into context Bateman’s obsession with orchids, his Victorian excentricity, and his devotion to the divine. The talk concludes with a case study of a recent change to the garden that, while initially controversial and rejected at planning, is now being implemented and has helped to restore Bateman’s original inception more fully.
A cream tea will be available. Teas must be booked before October 31st The lecture is free to members but tea is £7.75, non-members £12.75
