SUMMARY:Visit - Wroxton Abbey & Sulgrave Manor
DESCRIPTION:Visit to Wroxton Abbey and Sulgrave Manor \nOur Visit for July: Wroxton Abbey\, Oxfordshire and Sulgrave Manor\, Oxfordshire \nWroxton Abbey Gardens \nThe Jacobean abbey at Wroxton is surrounded by eighteenth-century gardens peppered with mature trees.  The formal terraced layout of the gardens near the abbey was devised in 1727 possibly by the Royal Gardener\, Henry Wise (1653-1738). The lower grounds were partially converted to a Rococo serpentine style between 1731 and 1751 with the advice of Sanderson Miller (1716-1780).  It is from this period of development that garden features survive\, including a serpentine river with cascades\, two lakes\, a Mount\, a Gothic Dovecot\, and the Drayton Arch. In 1963 the abbey and pleasure grounds were sold to Fairleigh Dickinson University\, New Jersey\, USA\, and today function as an overseas college. \n  \nMeet at 10.30am in front of the Carriage House (to the right of the main building).  Tea/coffee and biscuits will be served in the Buttery followed by a tour of the grounds which will last approximately 1½ hours. Please note that there are mostly flat paths through the landscape with some uneven areas.  It is aimed to leave Wroxton around 12.30pm and arrive at Sulgrave Manor at 1pm.  Please bring a picnic lunch to Sulgrave.  A lunchtime hot drink of tea/coffee is included with the visit. \n  \nSulgrave Manor Gardens \n\n\n\nPhoto: Sulgrave Manor’s ‘Photo Gallery’ on the Sulgrave Manor Trust -Home website: https://sulgravemanor.org.uk/garden [5/6/2022]\n\n\n\nSulgrave is a Tudor manor house\, acquired by the wool merchant Lawrence Washington in 1539.  John Washington\, a family member who owned Sulgrave\, emigrated to America in 1656.  His great-grandson was George Washington (1732-99) the first President of the USA.  In 1914 Sulgrave Manor was purchased as a memorial to a century of peace between Britain and the USA.  The garden was restored by Sir Reginald Blomfield in the 1920s in an Arts-and-Crafts style.  Today\, garden features include topiary\, a heritage-tree orchard\, and floral borders.  A ‘Tudor Villagers’ garden with historic herbs and vegetables\, was recently created.  The Sulgrave head gardener will give a tour of the garden lasting approximately 45 mins engaging with the history of the garden\, plant information\, and plans for the garden’s future. \n  \nWroxton Abbey\, Wroxton: Postcode: OX15 6PX.  The Abbey is easy to find\, either from the M40 south exit Junction 11 A422\, or the Banbury Road/B4100 and A422.  There are a few parking spaces available in the College carpark which is sign-posted off the main drive.
