SUMMARY:Visit - Upton Wold
DESCRIPTION:Our Visit for June: Upton Wold on the Northwick Estate\, between Moreton-in-Marsh and Broadway\, Gloucestershire \nAn ideal summer visit to this beautiful private garden situated within the Cotswold countryside. \nWhen the present owners of the garden arrived at Upton Wold in 1973\, there was no garden to be seen\, only a holly bush\, two ancient yews\, a few old apple trees and an amazing view.  How things have changed!  Over the past forty years a garden has been constructed and planted by the owners with the help of landscape architects the late\, great\, Brenda Colvin (1897-1981) and Hal Moggridge (b. 1936)\, and more recently Tony Kirkham formerly Head of Arboretum\, Gardens & Horticulture Services at Kew Gardens\, and Garden Designer Rupert Golby. \nUpton Wold exhibits an outstanding collection of trees\, and holds the National Collection of Walnut (Juglans) trees and Caucasian Wingnuts (Pterocarya).  Many garden ‘rooms’ have been created including the Pond Garden\, the Hidden Garden\, the Gravel Garden\, and the Woodland Garden\, together with canals\, fountains and borders. The labyrinth\, designed by Hal Moggridge and completed in March 2013\, acts as a focal point through the arboretum\, leading to the medieval village of Upton. \nOur visit will commence at 2.30pm with a Talk and Tour of the garden followed by Afternoon Tea and Home-made Cakes at 4pm in the pretty Garden Room.  Photography in the garden is permitted\, however visitors are requested not to take photos of the private house. \nA map of the garden can be found below. \nNot suitable for wheelchairs: the garden has many steps\, and uneven ground. \nDirections: \nUpton Wold (GL56 9TR) can be found 4½m W of Moreton-in-Marsh on the A44.\nFrom Moreton/Stow ½m past A424 turn Right opposite Deer Sign to road into fields then Left at Mini Crossroads.
