DESCRIPTION:A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE DESIGNS OF NICHOLAS HAWKSMOOR FOR THE GARDENS IN WRAY WOOD\,  AND SEE  HIS GARDEN BUILDINGS. We will go into the Mausoleum\, visit the archives\, view the surviving sculpture\, walk through the wood to view and  the Temple of the Four Winds. \nScroll down for the programme and travel information\, and contact details of the organiser. \nNICHOLAS HAWKSMOOR AND THE GARDEN IN WRAY WOOD\nVISIT TO CASTLE HOWARD ARCHIVE AND GARDENS\nThursday 11 July 2019\n Programme\n\nLeaders: Dr Christopher Ridgway (Curator\, Castle Howard) and Dr Sally Jeffery (The Gardens Trust) \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease come prepared for wet weather conditions.\n\n\nThis day will include a lot of walking\, some of it on uneven ground\, in areas where  no transport will be available\n\n\n\n\n\n10.30am      Meet at entrance to Castle Howard in the courtyard. Refreshments are available at the Courtyard Café if you arrive early. Meet the group there and walk to house or take the small visitors’ train\n\n\n\n\n\n11.00 am     Arrival and welcome by Dr Ridgway\n\n\n\n\n\n11.15 am     Visit archive with Dr Ridgway and Dr Jeffery to view estate plans\, bills and accounts\, lists of sculpture\, and drawings for the temples and the mausoleum.Both originals and photographs of Hawksmoor drawings for Wray Wood and the garden buildings will be available to view.\n\n\n\n\n\n12.15 am    Walk with Dr Jeffery to view sculptures of Apollo and Venus\, and\n\n\n                   then to the Courtyard Café\n\n\n\n\n\n12.45-1.30 Sandwich lunch with tea/coffee in Courtyard Café\n\n\n\n\n\n1.30            Walk back to house\n\n\n\n\n\n2.00            Walk to view the reservoir and ‘Aztec Pyramid’ in Wray Wood with Dr Ridgway and Dr Jeffery\, followed by entry to the Temple of the Four Winds and the Mausoleum\n\n\n\n\n\n4.00pm       Return to house for tea and discussion\n\n\n\n\n\n4.30pm       Event ends\n\n\n\n Castle Howard is about 15 miles north-east of York near Welburn and Malton. Traffic can be heavy\, so allow plenty of time. If you are arriving by car\, access is from the A64. Follow the brown signs to Castle Howard and approach through the Carmire Gate. Please be aware of the size restrictions: 2.6m x 3.43m (8’ 6” wide x 11’ 3” high). Park in the main car park and enter the courtyard.\nThere are excellent train services to York and to Malton\, and a local bus runs from York to Castle Howard; the journey takes about an hour.
