DESCRIPTION:DESIGN STUDY DAY WITH KIM WILKIE AT VITSOE\n\n\n\n\nVitsoe HQ\, Royal Leamington Spa \n\nFor our exclusive Design Study Day with internationally renowned landscape architect Kim Wilkie we are visiting the home of British furniture manufacturer Vitsoe at their new HQ and production building in Royal Leamington Spa. \nDesigned and built to reflect the company’s system-thinking\, this unique structure was opened in 2017 and Kim Wilkie has designed an exceptional landscape to surround it. Orientated north to south\, the cream\, cuboid building blends beautifully with its surroundings and inside\, the peaceful timber-framed interior provides optimal working conditions\, with natural light and ventilation\, and a glazed wall overlooking a community wood. Kim Wilkie’s inspiration for the landscaping came\, in part\, from the beautiful sculptural quality of the ridge-and-furrow fields of the Midlands – the corrugated patterns created by centuries of ploughing. He was also struck by the significance of Vitsoe’s location\, occupying a strategic point between the railway station\, the open green spaces and the town centre. \nKim will guide us round the landscape\, show us the plans and design material produced for it\, and explain the implementation. We will have the opportunity to learn from him about the traditions of earth sculpting and grazing in the English landscape\, and how these have informed his designs\, both here at Vitsoe and at other projects\, including Orpheus at Boughton House*\, and the City of London Cemetery. There will be time for us to ask questions. \nVitsoe’s managing director\, Mark Adams will give us a tour of the HQ and production building\, and talk on the ethos and heritage of the company\, which\, since 1959\, has created and evolved furniture that allows its customers to “live better\, with less\, that lasts longer”. This year\, Vitsoe will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. It is renowned for its single-minded commitment to responsible design\, as well as its continuous production of Dieter Rams’s original furniture\, for which it holds an exclusive worldwide licence.
